Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Within us all there is a silent system working to keep us healthy- the lymph system. Without it our bodies would swell up like balloons, swamping our cells with stagnant fluid. The lymph system's impact is so far reaching that many don't even realize that minor aches and pains, bloating, digestive issues, allergies, or susceptibility to colds and flu may be due to a sluggish lymph system and a compromised immune system.
Lymphatic drainage is a highly specialized massage technique widely used in Europe to treat a variety of medical conditions, daily complaints, as well as numerous aesthetic benefits. Slowly gaining popularity here in North America, it is a health and wellness tool that can benefit all, with the exception of certain medical conditions.
What is lymphatic drainage massage?
Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized form of massage that stimulates the lymphatic system with gentle massaging strokes. The light rhythmical massage encourages the lymphatic system to eliminate metabolic waste products, excess fluid and bacteria, increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and provides an overall sense of deep relaxation and well-being.
What is lymph?
Lymph is a clear, yellowish fluid that flows around your body, carrying white blood cells and antibodies to your tissues and organs. Lymph is essential to your immune system and helps you fight infection by "draining" the toxins out of your body.
Where do toxins come form?
-
Drinking alcohol
-
Eating white sugar
-
Refined foods
-
Drinking too much black tea and coffee
-
Pesticides spayed on our fruits & vegetables
-
Chemicals in cosmetics
-
Medication
-
Vaccines
-
Living in polluted cities
-
Excess stress
It's a fact that most of us dump toxins into our bodies every day. And increasingly so. Lymphtaic drainage is a method of cleansing the body.
What does detoxing really mean?
Detoxing is a technical term for cleansing. Simply put, a detox for the body can be compared to an oil change for your car. How? It gets the "system" working more efficiently by flushing out toxins and increasing circulation.
Within us all there is a silent system working to keep us healthy; called the lymphatic system. Without it our bodies would swell up like balloons, swamping our cells with stagnant fluid. The lymph system's impact is so far reaching that many don't even realize that minor aches and pains, low energy or susceptibility to colds and flu may be due to a sluggish lymph system and a compromised immune system.
Detoxing is a method of flushing impurities from the body. Poor eating habits, lack of physical activity, pollutants from the environment, pesticides spayed onto our foods, smoking, drinking alcohol are some of the things that contribute to the toxin build up in our bodies which lead to illness.
Why do we need to detox?
Our lymphatic system is increasingly having a harder time cleansing the body of the multitude of toxins that we present to it everyday through our diet, the environment we live in, our lifestyle, the exessive stress we are under, alcohol and the amount of refined foods that are available to us.
What to expect during your session?
At the initial consultation, your therapist will acquire some information regarding your general health, lifestyle, medical history and any areas of concern that have driven you to seek the therapists help.
The massage treatment takes place in a heated room as warmth is an important factor in increasing lymphatic flow. Also the warmth helps to relax you.
Lymphatic drainage massage is given on a massage table, and you will be draped in discreetly-placed sheets. The therapist will generally start at the neck area and work there way into the area's specific to your treatment goals.
Lymphatic drainage massage uses very light pressure, as well as long, gentle, rhythmic strokes and soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes (the main lymph nodes are situated in the neck, armpits, and groin).
No devices, tools, oils, injections, or creams are used.
It is a manual massage treatment and is highly relaxing.
A session can last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.
(depending on the condition treated). Most clients book 60min sessions.
Is there anything else I can do to help my lymphatic system?
Lymphatic drainage is about flushing out your system. You can aid your lymphatic system and general health by exercising, eating well, living a well balanced lifestyle, managing stress, and drinking plenty of water every day.
Are treatments covered by my insurance plan?
Treatments are covered by most insurance plans under Massage Therapy or Naturopathy.
A series of sessions is recommend for optimal results.

Contraindications
For the most part lymphatic drainage massage is safe. With such a light touch, the danger of causing damage to the tissue is slim. However, there are a few conditions that are contraindicated, and these happen when an increase of lymph flow would be detrimental.
- Acute inflammation
- Malignant tumors
- Thrombosis
- Major heart problems.
Acute inflammation caused by bacteria, viruses, poisons or allergens is contraindicated. You can tell if this is the case because the tissues will be hot, red and painful, with congestion accompanied by fever. Lymphatic drainage massage will push these substances into the lymph channels before the body has a chance to eliminate them through phagocytosis in the interstitial spaces. With lymphatic drainage you can spread the toxic substances throughout the body. Wait a few days until the condition is not acute, and the body has had a chance to clean up the area.
Malignant tumors are a contraindication for lymphatic drainage massage because of the fear of spreading the cancer. Wait until after the malignancy is treated to perform lymphatic drainage massage.
Thrombosis and phlebitis are two conditions that can lead to free floating blood clots.
Major heart problems If the heart is not fully functioning the edema can be lymphodynamic, due to lack of venous return. Putting more fluid into the heart would only stress it more, worsening the condition.

Lymphatic drainage massage
is an increadibly beneficial to treatment to almost everyone. By being able to address the lymph system directly, client's immune system function can be significantly increased. When we have a strong immune system, we are happy, balanced and whole.
Lymphatic drainage massage can go where Deep Tissue and Swedish cannot- into swollen areas. The paradox is that such a superficial light-touch technique has such a deep impact.
It is very relaxing, stress reducing, ailment treating, water retention eliminating, beauty enhancing, and pain relieving treatment, and so much more.
I urge you try it and see the amazing results for yourself!
" I help men and women detoxify their bodies pleasurably, so they will reduce water retention, bloating, have skin that glows, relieve stress, manage migraines, and be better fat burning machines without undergoing any painful and invasive procedures."
